Trump announces that "something will happen" to end the war

Trump announces that "something will happen" to end the war
  • French President Emmanuel Macron has called a meeting today of the so-called Coalition of the Willing—the group of countries willing to support Ukraine's security after a ceasefire, including by sending troops. The day's agenda includes two main points, highlights Le Monde :

    • 10:30 a.m. (9:30 a.m. in Lisbon): In-person meeting at the Élysée Palace between the approximately 30 leaders who make up the coalition. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy , Finnish President Alexander Stubb , Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk , Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez , Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen , European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President António Costa will be in Paris for the meeting. Other leaders will be present via videoconference, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.
    • 2:00 PM (1:00 PM in Lisbon): Telephone meeting with US President Donald Trump. European leaders are expected to call on the US leader to impose more sanctions on Russia and convey to the US leader each country's contributions to security guarantees.
  • Russia launched 112 drones against Ukraine last night. The Ukrainian Air Force said it intercepted 84 of the aircraft. The remaining drones hit the Kharkiv region in the north of the country and the city of Odessa in the south.

No deaths were reported, but five people were injured in Kharkiv and there was considerable material damage.

  • Russia today denounced the security guarantees demanded by Kiev for a peace agreement with Moscow, considering them to be "guarantees of danger to the European continent."

Russian diplomatic spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reiterated that Russia considers the security guarantees requested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which will be discussed today at a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, “ absolutely unacceptable .”

"These are not guarantees of security for Ukraine, they are guarantees of danger for the European continent," Zakharova told reporters at an economic conference in Vladivostok, in Russia's Far East.

  • Donald Trump said Wednesday that he remains committed to ending the war in Ukraine in a telephone interview with CBS News . Still, the US President admitted that the planned bilateral meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky is unlikely to take place.

"I've been watching this and talking to President Putin and President Zelensky. Something will happen, but they're not ready yet. But something will happen. We will do this," the US leader declared.

  • Good morning.
